Madrid – The capital and largest city of Spain, its population is roughly 3.3 million, with the entire Madrid metropolitan area calculated to be 6.3 million.  While Madrid possesses a modern infrastructure, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic neighborhoods and streets. Its landmarks include the Royal Palace of Madrid; the Teatro Real (Royal theatre) with its restored 1850 Opera House; the Buen Retiro park, founded in 1631.  The nightlife in Madrid is undoubtedly one of the city’s main attractions. Tapas bars, cocktail bars, clubs, jazz lounges, live music venues, flamenco theatres and establishments of all kinds cater for all tastes and ages.
Puerta del Sol – Gate of The Sun:  This plaza is the heart of Madrid and one of the busiest places in the city – a hub for the local transit system, a favorite meeting spot for locals, a visible area for festivals or political demonstrations, and an opportune location for street performers. Lying in the heart of Madrid, it is a place where tourists and locals alike visit to enjoy the numerous shops (including the famous El Corte Ingles) and delectable restaurants.

Plaza Mayor: Perhaps the best known plaza in Madrid, this impressive square is now one of the main stops on any tourist visit. Originally built outside the city walls, this enclosed square has played host to bullfights, markets, symphonies, tournaments and executions; today, it is ringed with cafes and restaurants.

The Palacio Real (Royal Palace) is an enormous palace, one of the biggest in Europe, with scorching plains of concrete around it.  El Retiro Park is the main park of Madrid, the perfect place to sit and rest during a sunny day.  Optional Activity: Catch a Flamenco Show

4-star Hotel:  A 5-minute walk from Puerta del Sol and its Metro station, the hotel is located in the center of Madrid. The spacious, air-conditioned rooms have modern décor and wooden floors. Includes free Wi-Fi, flat-screen satellite TV and a laptop safe. The stylish bathroom contains basic toiletries and a hairdryer.

There are a variety of cafes, restaurants and bars located in and around Puerta del Sol, with Plaza Mayor only a 5-minute walk away.  Even Madrid’s Royal Palace and Gardens are less than 1 km away.

Alternative plan description:
We will park the vans in La Linea, Spain and walk across the boarder and into Gibraltar, thus, bring your passports:  Gibraltar is the British overseas territory located on the southern end of the Iberian Peninsula at the entrance of the Mediterranean. It has an area of 6.8 square kilometers (2.6 sq mi) and a northern boarder with Andalusia, Spain.  The Rock of Gibraltar is the major landmark of the region. At its foot is the densely populated city area, home to almost 30,000 Gibraltarians and other nationalities.  An Anglo-Dutch force captured Gibraltar from Spain in 1704 during the War of the Spanish Succession.  The Rock of Gibraltar, 426 m (1,398 ft) high, is a monolithic limestone promontory and was one of the Pillars of Hercules, then known to the Romans as Mons Calpe, and the other pillar being Mons Abyla or Jebel Musa, is on the African side of the Strait. In ancient times, the two points marked the limit to the known world, a myth originally fostered by the Phoenicians.

The Monkeys of Gibraltar – Barbary Macaques – Tourists should be aware that the Barbary macaques are wild animals and do bite.  Open day to explore the city and/or hike to the top of The Rock.

The Alhambra: The Palace & fortress complex

Late afternoon transfer towards Valencia (5 hours drive) with a stop along the way for dinner in Murcia

Arrival at our hotel in Valencia’s city center

Optional Activity Description – The Alhambra: The Palace and fortress complex
It was constructed during the mid 14th century by the Berber rulers of the Emirate of Granada in al-Andalus, occupying the top of the hill of the Assabica on the southeastern border of the city of Granada.  The Alhambra’s Moorish palaces were built for the last Muslim Emirs in Spain.  The Alhambra is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the inspiration for many songs and stories.

Optional stop/ early departure permitting: While heading north to Valencia, along the Costa Blanca, stopping for dinner on the coast in Cartagena – Much of the history of Cartagena goes to its coveted defensive port, one of the most important in the western Mediterranean.  Archaeological sites can also be found. Although there are some ruins from the Carthaginian ages, like the remains of the Punic rampart (built in 227 BC with the foundation of the city), most of its oldest monuments date from the ages of the Roman Empire when Cartagena flourished. Among its numerous Roman remains stands out the recently restored Roman theatre of Carthago Nova, one of the main landmarks of the city.
